The plumber came up out of my crawlspace and said he wasn’t going back down until I looked at something. It was supposed to be a simple job, just a leaking line under the kitchen, maybe forty minutes of work. Instead, he told me someone had run electrical wiring down there that had never been properly installed. It didn’t come off my panel either—it came through the foundation from outside. I’ve owned this house since 1996, and there had never been anything in that crawlspace except pipes and dirt.
He handed me the light and stayed on the ladder while I climbed down. I got maybe twelve feet in before the wire ended at a small metal box mounted against one of the foundation walls. There were no switches or outlets on it, just a tiny green light that was still glowing. The plumber told me not to touch it until we knew what it was connected to. Then I noticed a second wire disappearing behind the insulation and heading toward the far end of the crawlspace.
We followed it carefully and found another box hidden behind a loose section of plywood. This one had a date written on it in permanent marker: 2004. I couldn’t think of anything that had happened that year that would explain it, so I asked the plumber if he recognized the equipment. He shook his head and said it looked like some kind of old monitoring system. Then he pointed at a tiny slot on the front and told me there was something inside it.
I opened the box and found a small memory card taped to the inside. The plumber immediately told me not to put it into my computer, so I took it to a local technician instead. Two hours later, he called and asked me to come back because he had recovered several files from it. Most were ordinary recordings of the crawlspace, but one folder was dated from the year before I bought the house. The final file was only seventeen seconds long, and when the technician played it, I heard my own voice saying, “Please don’t let them find the box.”:::
