My mother’s handwriting showed up on a note in my kitchen four years after she died. It was just a grocery list stuck to my refrigerator with a magnet. Milk, batteries, and one strange instruction: “Call the man about the porch.” I don’t have a porch. The house she died in had a porch, but it’s been somebody else’s house since 2022. I stood there staring at the note long enough for the ice maker to cycle twice.
My daughter’s handwriting has always been close to my mother’s, so that was the obvious explanation. I called her at work and asked whether she had written the note as some kind of joke. She said she hadn’t, and then she asked me why I was mentioning the porch. I told her exactly what the note said, and she went quiet. After a few seconds, she asked whether I still had the old photographs from my mother’s house. Then she said, “Dad, don’t call anyone about that house yet.”
I went through the photographs that night and found one I’d never noticed before. It showed my mother standing on the porch with a man I didn’t recognize, but written on the back was the same phrase from the note. The date was six months before she died, and the house number was clearly visible behind them. I called my daughter again, and this time she admitted that my mother had once asked her to keep a key for her. She had forgotten about it until I mentioned the note.
The key was still in an envelope inside an old box in my daughter’s closet. We drove to the house the next morning and stood across the street for several minutes before deciding what to do. The current owner answered the door and said he’d found something strange in the porch floor when he renovated it. He disappeared inside and returned with a small wooden box that had my mother’s name written on it. Inside was a photograph, a key, and a note in my mother’s handwriting that said, “If you’re reading this, then someone finally came looking for what I left underneath the porch.”:::
