The Camera Caught My Father Outside

The neighbors’ security camera caught my father walking down our street. He’s had dementia for six years and hasn’t left his room. The footage was recorded at two in the morning, and it was clear as anything—his coat, his walk, even the way he holds his left arm. The staff at his facility have a signature for a wellness check at 2:15, and somebody had apparently seen him in his bed. I watched the clip probably sixty times because I know my father’s walk, and I’d know it from a mile away.

I finally showed it to my brother, who lives out of state and hasn’t visited since 2021. He watched it once and said, “That isn’t Dad.” I asked how he could possibly know that, and he pointed to the man’s left hand. My father had broken two fingers years ago and couldn’t straighten them completely. The man in the video could. Then my brother asked me to freeze the frame when the man passed the mailbox.

There was a reflection in the dark window of a parked car. It showed the man’s face more clearly than the security footage did. I didn’t recognize him, but my brother did. He said the man looked like our father’s younger brother, a man we’d been told died before either of us was born. I laughed because the idea was ridiculous, but my brother wasn’t laughing. He said he’d found an old photograph of that uncle years ago and had never told me because our father had forbidden him from asking questions.

I called the nursing facility and asked to see my father’s records from that night. The staff insisted he had never left his room, but the wellness check had been signed by someone whose name wasn’t on the current employee list. I asked them to check the security cameras inside the building. They did, and one camera showed a man entering my father’s room at 1:42 a.m. He stayed for twelve minutes before leaving. When the footage was enlarged, I saw the same face from the street. And in his hand was an old photograph of my father taken when he was twenty years old.:::
