I Never Loved My Wife—I Married Her Because Her Father Owned the Company

I went out to the parking garage and I couldn’t get the key in the door. Her sister was standing there. She’d been waiting for me, and she said she’d known since 1993. She knew I hadn’t married her sister for love. She said their father had told her everything before the wedding because he wanted someone he trusted watching the business after he was gone.

I asked why she had never said anything. She told me her sister had always believed I loved her, and every year she had watched me become more important to the company. Then she said something that stopped me: “You think you fooled her for thirty-four years. You didn’t. You just gave her thirty-four years to believe the lie.”

She handed me a folder. Inside were copies of every major business decision I’d made since taking over. My wife had quietly reviewed them all. The company had grown, the employees had stayed, and the business was worth more than her father had ever imagined. She had known for years that I stayed for the company, but she had also decided that what I did for everyone there mattered more than why I had started.

Then her sister told me why she’d been waiting in the garage. My wife had changed her will six months earlier. The company wasn’t going to me. She was leaving it to the employees through a trust, with her sister as trustee. I asked what I was getting. Her sister looked at me for a long moment and said, “Nothing you didn’t already take.”
