My Wife’s Best Friend Finally Told Her Why They Hadn’t Spoken in Nineteen Years

Her friend took both her hands and said she had spent nineteen years believing my wife knew the truth. She said she had never moved to Oregon because she wanted to leave my wife behind. She moved because I told her my wife had discovered everything.

My wife looked at her and said, “Discovered what?” Her friend started crying. She told her that after the funeral, I had called her and said I couldn’t continue what we’d started. I told her my wife knew, that the marriage was over, and that she needed to leave town before things became ugly. She believed me. She packed her things and left three weeks later.

Then she told my wife something I’d never expected her to know. She had kept every message I’d sent her that summer. Not because she wanted to expose me, but because she couldn’t understand why I’d suddenly become afraid of my own wife. My wife asked to see them.

Her friend handed over her phone. The first message was from the morning after the funeral. It said, “She doesn’t know. Don’t tell her. I need you to trust me.” My wife read the rest in silence. There were dozens of messages, all contradicting the story I’d told her for nineteen years.

Then her friend looked at me across the reception and said, “I thought I was protecting her from the truth. I didn’t know I was helping you steal nineteen years from both of us.” My wife didn’t make a scene. She simply put the phone down, took off her wedding ring, and placed it on the table between us.
