I Betrayed My Wife With Her Brother’s Wife—and the Two Families Still Holiday Together

I betrayed my wife with her brother’s wife, and the two families still holiday together. It ended nine years ago. Every Thanksgiving, every Fourth of July, the four of us and the kids sit at the same tables, and I’ve watched my wife hug that woman more times than I can count. She has no idea that the person she welcomes into her home once shared something with her husband that neither of us has ever told her.

The other woman couldn’t stand it either. We agreed to stop, and we did. Then, somehow, we both sat down at the same table that November and passed dishes like nothing had happened. We ended an affair and kept the punishment, and the punishment is a barbecue. Every holiday became a quiet exercise in pretending, with both of us watching my wife laugh with someone who had betrayed her without her knowledge.

Her husband—my wife’s brother—has been colder toward me since about 2018, and I’ve spent years telling myself it was politics, personality, anything except the possibility that he knows. I’ve never had proof. I’ve never asked. But this Fourth of July, he asked me to help him with something in the garage. He shut the door behind us, stood there for a moment, and said something that made my stomach drop.

He said, “You know what’s strange? I’ve spent nine years wondering why you two look at each other like people who are trying very hard not to remember something.” I couldn’t speak. He didn’t accuse me of anything else. He just looked at me and said, “I don’t need you to confess. I need you to understand that every year you make her invite both of you into the same house, you’re asking her to live inside a lie she never agreed to.”
