My Brother Has Told People Our Father Hit Me Because I Deserved It

My aunt walked over and told him to stop. She had been fourteen too, standing in the same doorway, and she remembered exactly what happened. She said our father had been angry before I even entered the room, and I had not provoked him. My brother stared at her and said she was remembering it wrong. She told him she had spent thirty-one years staying quiet because she thought correcting him would destroy the family.

My son had been standing nearby, and he finally asked why nobody had ever told him that his uncle was lying. I didn’t know what to say. My brother immediately said I was trying to turn my children against him, just as I had supposedly done with our father. My aunt shook her head and said, “No. She’s spent thirty-one years protecting everyone except herself.” My son looked at me and asked me what really happened.

I told him the truth for the first time. I told him I had been fourteen, that my father hit me, and that my brother had watched it happen. I told him I had never blamed my brother for being a frightened fourteen-year-old, but I could no longer accept him rewriting what happened into something that made our father innocent. My son didn’t say anything for a long time. Then he asked my brother why he had told his children a story that wasn’t his to tell.

My brother started crying and said he needed to believe our father wasn’t the kind of man who could do that. My aunt answered before I could. She said, “You don’t get to make her carry the truth just because you couldn’t.” Nobody spoke after that. For the first time in thirty-one years, the story was finally sitting on the table exactly as it happened—and I wasn’t the one being asked to apologize for it.
