You Need to Name a Custodian

He sat down on the edge of the bed and said: She’s not mine. She’s my brother’s. Then he told me about a night in November 2017 that I knew nothing about — his brother in a car outside our house at one in the morning, four months before the overdose, telling him there was a girl in Kettering and a woman who wanted nothing to do with the family and a promise he wanted somebody to keep. My husband said yes in a driveway and never mentioned it to me, and then his brother died in March, and by then saying it out loud would have meant explaining why he hadn’t said it in November.

He’s been paying her mother since 2018. Not much and not regularly — a few hundred a month out of an account I don’t look at, which is its own conversation and one we’re still having. He’s met the girl three times. She knows he’s her uncle. She does not know about the money and her mother has apparently told him more than once that she doesn’t want it, and takes it anyway, which he said with no judgment at all in his voice.

The sixty percent was because of a conversation with his own mother in January. She’s eighty-one, she’s the only other person who knew, and she’d told him that if he went first and nobody had written anything down, that girl would end up with nothing and no proof of anything. So he did it in February and put my name on forty percent and did not tell me, and when I asked him why not, he said he’d been trying to work out a way to raise it for seven years and that every version started with there’s something I should have told you in 2017.

I’m not going to pretend I’ve landed anywhere. The lie is seven years old and it’s the kind that gets heavier the longer you look at it. But we drove to Kettering in June and I met a fourteen-year-old who has her father’s chin and a mother who was polite to me in a doorway for about ten minutes, and it’s a start on something. The percentages are staying as they are. That part I decided in about four seconds, and it’s the only thing in the last six months I’ve been completely sure of.
