Write Down Today’s Date

For maybe five seconds, standing next to the copier with my plant under my arm, I heard my own name in the applause — somebody said it while they clapped, the way you’d announce a retirement — and twenty-six years arrived at me all at once. Then I set the plant down and went back to work, because the thing on the lawyer’s desk in Cleveland had been sitting there since March and the only piece it was missing was exactly what my manager had just done in front of eleven witnesses. I’d been documenting since 2022. Every reassignment, every account pulled from me and handed to someone thirty years younger, every performance note that praised me and every raise that went elsewhere. Fifty-one is not a protected class in a room like that until it is.

I’m not going to pretend the case was clean or that I felt righteous carrying that plant. I’d spent three years not saying anything, telling myself it was the market, telling myself I was tired. What changed was a spreadsheet: eleven people cut or reassigned since 2021, nine of them over forty-eight, and I had the org charts because I’d built half of them. The lawyer read it in April and said the word pattern, and then she said the harder word, which was retaliation, and told me not to resign and not to react — to keep going in and keep writing things down. So I sat at the desk by the copier for four more months and did my job well, and every single thing that was said to me in passing went into a file that night.

It settled in February. There’s a number and there’s a paragraph that says I can’t discuss it, and I’ll say only that I stopped needing them before they stopped needing me. Nobody from that Monday meeting has called. The kid from Marketing did — he’s at another firm now and he told me he thinks about that clap sometimes, and I told him what I’ve come to believe, which is that four people joining in is not four decisions, it’s one room deciding it isn’t going to be the one who doesn’t. My plant is on a windowsill at home. My manager, as far as I know, still has his corner. He never did write down the date. I did.
