There Was Lipstick on My Husband’s Collar — and It Was My Mother’s

Grace said, “That’s from the home. That’s your mother’s.” Then she told me she’d been spending every Thursday at my mother’s house because my mother had asked her to come. She’d been sick for months and didn’t want me to know because she was terrified I’d put my life on hold to take care of her. The $900 wasn’t for another woman. It was for groceries, medication, and someone to sit with her when she couldn’t manage the evenings alone. “She made me swear I wouldn’t tell you,” my husband said. “She wanted you to keep living your life.”

I asked why my mother had never called me. He said she’d been angry with me since August, but not for the reason I thought. She’d found out I’d been considering moving her into assisted living and believed I’d already decided she was becoming a burden. My husband had promised to keep visiting until she was ready to talk to me herself. The lipstick on his collar had happened when she hugged him goodbye one Thursday. “She didn’t want you to see her as sick,” he said. “She wanted you to remember her the way she was.”

Then he showed me the phone he’d been taking to the garage. It contained months of messages from my mother, including one from the night before: “If Grace finds out I’ve been making him come here, she’ll forgive me. But don’t let her come tomorrow.” I asked why. He looked at me for a long time and said my mother had something she’d been hiding since August. “She knows why your father left,” he said. “And tomorrow she was finally going to tell you what really happened.”
