My Wife Had a Second Phone Line for Sixteen Years — And One Number Called It 4,000 Times

I drove to the address from the call records that afternoon. It was a small apartment building I’d never seen before, and the number on the door matched the one from the records. An older man answered. When I said my wife’s name, he didn’t ask who I was. He just looked at me for a few seconds and said, “I wondered when you’d come.” Then he told me my wife had given him that number in 2009 and made him promise never to call our house. I asked why he’d called her more than four thousand times, and he said, “Because she told me you’d never know what those calls were for.”

He invited me inside and showed me a box he’d kept in the closet for sixteen years. It was filled with photographs, birthday cards, hospital paperwork, and dozens of letters from my wife. I recognized her handwriting immediately. Most were addressed to someone named Daniel, but there was one photograph that stopped me — my wife was standing beside a little boy who looked about six years old. I asked who he was, and the man said he’d been the reason my wife kept that second line. Then he handed me a letter she’d written just three weeks before she died. The first sentence said, “If my husband ever finds this house, you need to tell him what happened to our son before he asks you why I lied about having only two children.”

I told him my wife and I had two children. He said, “I know. That’s why she made me promise.” Then he opened another folder and showed me school records, medical bills, and a birth certificate dated three years before our wedding. The mother’s name was my wife’s. The father’s name was blank. He said the boy had been taken away when he was nine and my wife had spent the next sixteen years trying to find him without telling me. Then he put one final photograph on the table. It was taken six months ago. The boy was now a grown man, standing outside a house forty minutes away. On the back, my wife had written: “I finally found him. Now I need my husband to know why I let him believe our son was dead…”
