I waited until dinner before asking my mother about it. I didn’t mention the pediatrician or the authorization list. I simply asked her whether she’d spoken to my daughter’s father since 2021. She put her fork down and stared at me for a few seconds. Then she asked, “Did they call you today?” I said yes. She closed her eyes and told me she’d added him because he’d contacted her that year and said he was afraid something had happened to our daughter. I asked why he hadn’t contacted me. She said, “Because you told him never to.”
I hadn’t remembered saying that. My mother went upstairs and came back with a folder she’d kept hidden in the back of her closet. Inside were letters, photographs, and copies of messages he’d sent her every few months for the last five years. He’d never asked to see me. He’d only asked whether our daughter was healthy, whether she was happy, and whether he was still allowed to be listed as someone who could pick her up in an emergency. My mother told him I would never agree to it, but he’d said he didn’t need me to agree. He just wanted someone to know where he was. Then she showed me the last letter he’d sent. It said, “If she ever asks why I disappeared, please don’t tell her I left because I didn’t love her. Tell her I left because someone was threatening to take her if I stayed.”
My mother finally admitted she’d known the whole story since 2021. She said she hadn’t told me because she’d promised him she wouldn’t unless he was sure it was safe. I asked whether it was safe now. She said she didn’t know. Then she told me the reason he’d suddenly appeared on the pediatrician’s list was because he’d called her three days ago and said the person he’d been afraid of was back. Tomorrow I’m supposed to meet my mother at the pediatrician’s office to remove his name. But tonight, before she left, she gave me one more envelope. My name was written on it in handwriting I hadn’t seen in seven years, and underneath it were the words: “If you still want me gone after you read this, I’ll never contact either of you again…”
