The first page was the deed to their house. Her name was on it, but so was mine. She looked at the date twice and then asked why I’d never mentioned it. I told her because I’d been waiting eleven years for my son to tell her himself. The folder contained every payment I’d made toward that house, every transfer, every canceled check, and the original agreement he’d signed when they bought it. He had promised that if they ever divorced, I would receive my share before anything was divided. She looked at my son and said, “You told me your mother gave us nothing.”
My son wouldn’t look at either of us. I opened the second section of the folder and showed her the bank statements. For eleven years, I’d been covering the property taxes and half the mortgage whenever he told me they were struggling. He’d told me he was doing it so I could “keep my place in the family.” She laughed when she heard that, but then she stopped. There was a letter from him dated three months earlier, asking the lawyer how quickly he could transfer the house into his wife’s name without my signature. I told her I’d found it that morning. She turned toward him and whispered, “You didn’t just hide the money from me. You tried to make me think your mother was the one who owed you.”
Then she opened the final envelope. Inside was a copy of the document I’d signed eleven years ago, along with a note from my son that I’d never seen. It said he’d promised himself that if she ever found out what he’d done, he’d give her the choice of keeping the house or selling it and splitting the proceeds with me. I asked him why he had never told her. He finally looked at me and said, “Because the morning I signed it, I already knew I wasn’t the one who paid for that house.” His wife turned back to the folder, read the name on the last page, and suddenly asked me why her father’s name was on the original deed…
