MY SISTER FINALLY TOLD ME WHAT THOSE ELEVEN DAYS HAD DONE TO HER

She told me she spent those eleven days calling the facility every night from the hotel. Mom kept asking when she was going home, and my sister kept believing I’d made a mistake that would be corrected when she returned. She said Mom cried the first night because she thought everyone had abandoned her. I knew she was frightened, but I had convinced myself that keeping the move secret was kinder than letting her watch it happen. My sister said that wasn’t the part she couldn’t forgive. It was that I had taken away her chance to say goodbye to Mom’s old life before it changed.

She came home from the trip and went straight to the facility, still carrying her suitcase. Mom barely recognized her at first and asked why she had left without saying goodbye. My sister said she spent the next two days sitting beside her, explaining that the move wasn’t permanent even though we both knew it probably was. She told me Mom kept asking whether I’d be angry with her for wanting to go home. That sentence stayed with me because Mom had spent her entire life worrying about making things easier for everyone else. My sister said she would have gone with her willingly if I’d simply told her what I was planning.

I apologized, but she said an apology couldn’t give Mom those eleven days back. I told her I still believed I had protected Mom from something she couldn’t understand, and my sister said maybe I had protected myself instead. We didn’t speak for months after that conversation. Eventually she came to my house with one of Mom’s old photographs, and we sat at the kitchen table without arguing. She said she could forgive me for making the decision, but she couldn’t forgive me for making it alone. I had spent fourteen months telling myself I had spared my mother a painful goodbye, but my sister made me understand that I had also stolen eleven days when she deserved to know the truth.
