THE FLORIST’S QUESTION CHANGED EVERYTHING

The florist asked me, “Do you want the flowers delivered before the ceremony or after?” I told her neither. Then I asked whether the venue had been instructed to follow the same “adults only” rule for every vendor and guest. She hesitated and said the bride’s mother had given them a list of exceptions. I asked her to read me the names. My brother’s name wasn’t on it. Neither was mine. But there were four other family members listed, including two children from the bride’s side.

I hung up and opened every vendor invoice I had access to. The same names appeared over and over. They had reserved hotel rooms, transportation, and even a private dinner for relatives who were apparently exempt from the rule. My brother had been excluded from everything. I called my son and asked whether he knew about the exceptions. He said he didn’t, then went quiet when I told him I’d seen the vendor list. Finally, he admitted his fiancée had told him my brother “wouldn’t understand what was happening anyway.”

I told him I wasn’t going to argue about the wedding anymore. I simply canceled the payments I was responsible for. The florist called me back ten minutes later and said the bride had already been informed. By that evening, my son was standing on my doorstep, furious and asking why I would embarrass him so close to the wedding. I handed him the invoices and said, “You didn’t embarrass yourself by having a child-free wedding. You embarrassed yourself by making an exception for everyone except the person you knew would be hurt.”
