THE DESIGNER CALLED ME BACK BEFORE I COULD EXPLAIN

I called the designer and asked one question: “Did my sister tell you this dress was based on mine?” She paused and said yes, but then added something I wasn’t expecting. My sister hadn’t simply asked for the same silhouette. She had sent the designer photographs from my wedding and requested that several details be copied exactly. Then she said my sister had complained that my dress was “too simple” and that she wanted to make hers look like the version I should have worn.

I asked the designer whether she’d already scheduled the fitting. She said it was set for Saturday and that my sister had already paid the deposit. I told her not to change anything yet. Instead, I forwarded her the group-chat screenshots. The designer went quiet after reading them. She said she’d never been shown those messages and asked whether I wanted her to cancel the appointment. I told her yes, but I also asked her to keep the original design file.

That evening my sister called, furious that the designer had contacted her. She said I was being petty over a dress and reminded me that she’d called it a tribute. I asked her why she’d spent a year mocking the wedding she now wanted to copy. She didn’t have an answer. Then I told her the designer had agreed to refund the deposit and that she was free to find someone else. My mother called afterward and tried to defend her, but I finally told her, “You laughed when she called my wedding cheap. You don’t get to call it a family tradition now that she wants the same dress.”
