She held the phone out to me. “He says these messages are fake.” I looked at the screen and immediately recognized the same account that had been contacting me for months. But there was something else — he’d accidentally sent her a screenshot of his own conversation, and the username at the top matched the account he’d been using with me. She didn’t say anything for a few seconds. Then she asked me to show her everything.
I handed her my phone. She scrolled through the messages, stopping at the ones where he’d complained about being “stuck” in his relationship and asked me what I’d do if he called off the wedding. Then she found a message I’d never noticed because it had come in while I was asleep. He’d written, “Once we’re married, she’ll never know.” My sister stared at that sentence for a long time. Then his phone started buzzing again.
She answered it on speaker. He immediately asked where she was and why she had his phone. My sister said only one thing: “You should probably start explaining what you meant by ‘once we’re married.’” There was complete silence on the other end. Then she hung up, took off her engagement ring, and put it on the table. She looked at me and said, “You were right. I just wish you’d been wrong.”
