HE KNEW WHICH SATURDAY I MEANT — AND THAT WAS THE PART THAT SCARED ME

I looked at the calendar and saw the three Saturdays circled in different ink. The first was his handwriting, the second was mine, and the third had been circled twice so heavily the paper was almost torn. I asked him what was happening on each date. He stared at the calendar for a long moment before finally admitting the third Saturday was when he had planned to meet the woman whose message I’d heard in the car. He said it wasn’t what I thought, but when I asked why she’d said I “deserved to know before Saturday,” he had no answer. Then he reached into his desk drawer and pulled out an envelope with my name on it.

Inside was a copy of a property agreement. My husband had been preparing to sell the house without telling me. The strange part was that the buyer wasn’t some random person. It was the same woman whose number had appeared on his phone. She wasn’t his girlfriend. She was a lawyer representing his late father’s estate, and the house had apparently been transferred to both of us years earlier under a condition neither of us had known about. My husband had discovered it months ago and had been trying to resolve the issue before telling me because he believed the sale would finally settle an old debt connected to his family. I asked why he’d kept it secret. He looked down and said, “Because if I told you before I knew the truth, you’d think I was choosing them over you.”

That Saturday, we went together. The lawyer placed the final documents on the table and explained that my husband’s family had been trying to reclaim the property for years, but the agreement specifically protected my ownership. My husband could not sell it without my signature. I looked at him and said, “So you spent months planning something you couldn’t even do without me?” He nodded. I slid the papers back across the table and told him we were keeping the house. Then I took his hand before we left. The secret he’d been terrified would destroy our marriage turned out to be the one thing that proved he couldn’t make the biggest decision of our lives without me.
