She asked me what he’d told her his mother’s name was. I gave her the name I’d known for twenty-three years, and her hand immediately went still on the table. “That isn’t her name,” she said. Then she pulled an old photograph from her purse. It showed my husband standing beside a woman I had never seen before, dated four years earlier — exactly when his Tuesday and Thursday “appointments” had started.
She told me he had introduced himself to her using a different name and claimed he was divorced, while I supposedly lived in another state. She had never known I existed. But when I showed her his messages, she noticed something I hadn’t: every Tuesday and Thursday, before meeting her, he had been going to the same address. She searched the address on her phone and suddenly went pale. “That’s where his mother lives,” she whispered. I laughed nervously and told her that was impossible. His mother had died years ago.
The next morning, we drove there together. An elderly woman opened the door, looked at the photograph on the woman’s phone, and immediately started crying. “You finally found him,” she whispered. She told us she’d been waiting four years for her son to come home. I stood there realizing my husband hadn’t simply been hiding another woman from me. He had been using a completely different name, telling different stories to different people, and somehow had managed to keep two separate lives from colliding for four years.
