I WASN’T THE WIFE — I WAS THE WOMAN WHO FOUND OUT THERE WAS ONE

Her name was on the list. My name was second. She had found four women connected to the same man, each told a different version of his life. One was supposedly his college girlfriend. Another thought he was divorced. I was the only one he’d told he was widowed. She sent me screenshots of messages between them, and then one photograph from the house on Route 4. There he was standing on the porch beside another woman, wearing the same ring he’d worn when he told me his daughter gave it to him. I asked when the picture was taken. She said three months ago.

I called him that evening and asked where he was. He said he was at work. I asked him about the house. There was a long silence, then he said, “Which house?” I told him Route 4. He hung up. Ten minutes later, the woman messaged me again. She had found something worse in the rental records. The house wasn’t rented under his name at all. It was leased under the name of a woman who had been paying his bills for almost two years. Then she sent me the lease. His signature appeared at the bottom as an emergency contact. I recognized the handwriting immediately.

The next morning, all three of us met at the same coffee shop. Nobody yelled. Nobody cried. We simply compared what he’d told each of us. The stories were almost identical, right down to the dates, the dead wife, and the daughter whose wedding he supposedly couldn’t afford. Then the fourth woman walked in carrying a folder. She placed it on the table and said, “I think we need to stop asking which one of us is the wife.” Inside were photographs, bank transfers, and a marriage certificate. He wasn’t legally married to any of us. But he had been married the entire time — to someone none of us had ever heard of.
