I finally worked the object free and stared at a flat, yellowed envelope sealed with brittle wax. Across the front, in neat cursive, was my ex-husband’s grandmother’s handwriting: “To the one who values this cabinet more than what it costs.” Inside was a handwritten letter explaining that the cabinet had a hidden compartment built by her late husband during the Depression. Tucked behind the letter were bearer bonds, a small velvet pouch containing her original wedding ring, and the deed to a tiny parcel of land she had quietly purchased decades earlier.
When my ex learned what had been found, he demanded half, insisting it had been his grandmother’s property. But his own attorney reminded him that the cabinet had been awarded to me in the divorce settlement, including everything contained within it. Even more surprising, the letter specifically explained why she’d hidden everything there. She wrote that the family had always chased whatever looked valuable first, while overlooking the things that carried love and history. She wanted the contents to go to the person who accepted the cabinet without expecting a reward.
A few weeks later, I sold the small piece of land and used the money as the down payment on my own home. I kept the sewing cabinet exactly where it belonged—in my living room—with the wedding ring and letter safely tucked inside. Every time I passed it, I smiled at the irony. My ex had fought for every expensive possession we owned, convinced he’d won the divorce. In the end, the only thing he willingly gave away turned out to be the most valuable of all.
