His little brother said he had been sitting in the back seat when they passed the terminal and saw Nate standing under the pickup sign with his suitcase. He shouted Nate’s name twice and pointed toward the window, but his father told him to sit down and be quiet. The boy thought maybe they were circling back, so he kept watching through the rear window until the terminal disappeared. Then he heard his father tell his wife, “He has a phone. He can figure it out.” For eleven days the child had apparently been carrying around the fact that he’d watched his brother get smaller through the back window and hadn’t been able to make the car stop.
I asked Nate whether anything had happened on the trip that might explain it. He said no at first, then remembered an argument on the last night. His father had asked whether Nate wanted to start spending more time at their house during the school year, and Nate had said he wanted to keep the custody schedule the way it was because his school, job, and friends were near me. His father hadn’t yelled. He’d just said, “Then I guess you’re old enough to start handling some things yourself.” The next morning they flew home on separate flights because Nate’s ticket had been booked with miles, and nobody ever told him there wouldn’t be anyone waiting when he landed.
A week later Nate’s half-brother called again, this time because he’d found the family tablet and wanted to show us something. There was a group message from the morning of the flights. Nate’s stepmother had reminded his father that Nate landed first and asked whether they should pick him up before driving home. His father replied, “No. He made it clear where he wants to live. His mother can start being his ride too.” The message had been sent three hours before Nate landed, which meant nobody had forgotten him and nobody thought he’d arranged another ride. They had known exactly where a sixteen-year-old would be standing, and they had driven past him anyway.
