His mother-in-law told me Kenzie had walked into that hospital room carrying a gift she’d bought with money from her own weekend job. She congratulated them, held the baby for maybe five minutes, and asked her father why he hadn’t told her. He said they’d been busy and that he hadn’t known how she’d react. Kenzie apparently smiled, said she understood, kissed the baby’s forehead, and left. The woman said she watched my daughter walk down the hallway alone, then went back into the room and asked her son-in-law how he could let his own child discover something that important from a stranger at Kroger.
That’s when he said the thing she’d been losing sleep over. He told her Kenzie had become “more Karen’s daughter than mine” years ago, and that he didn’t see why he needed to keep including her in every change happening in his household. His wife reminded him that Kenzie had been at their house eleven times during the pregnancy and could easily have been told. He answered that he’d deliberately asked everyone not to mention it because he wanted his wife to have a pregnancy “without the baggage from my first family.” His mother-in-law said the room went completely silent, and then her daughter asked him whether that meant Kenzie was baggage too. He didn’t answer.
Then she told me why she’d gone looking for my number. After Kenzie left the hospital, her father had sent a message to the family group chat saying the visit had “gone better than expected” and thanking everyone for keeping the pregnancy private. His mother-in-law had taken a screenshot because the message made her sick. Underneath it, his own sister replied, “She deserved to know months ago,” and he answered, “She knows now. That’s enough.” Kenzie had spent eleven visits sitting in a house where every adult knew she was going to have a little sister — and every one of them had been specifically told by her father not to tell her.
