She sent me the entire screenshot instead of just the one message. The chat had been created on January third, and within minutes somebody asked, “Are we adding Ethan?” His father answered almost immediately: “No. If he’s in here, everything ends up getting back to his mother, and I want one place where we can plan things without dealing with that.” His wife reacted with a thumbs-up. Then somebody asked how Ethan was supposed to know about birthdays and dinners, and his father wrote, “I’ll tell him what he needs to know.” There were seventy-seven messages after that. Nobody mentioned Ethan again.
His stepmother’s sister said she’d kept the screenshot because the explanation bothered her, especially since she’d watched Ethan answer his father’s texts for years. Then she showed me what happened three weeks later. They planned the cousin’s birthday dinner entirely in that chat, and Ethan’s father actually reminded everyone twice about the time. At 4:18 that afternoon, his wife asked, “Did you tell Ethan?” and he replied, “No, leave it. There won’t be room if everybody comes.” That night, when Ethan eventually asked why nobody had told him, his father said it had been “in the chat” and acted as though Ethan had simply missed it.
I showed Ethan because he asked to see the screenshots himself. He read them once, handed my phone back, and said, “Okay.” Then he asked whether we could still take his cousin out for something from our house, exactly like he’d asked in March. His stepmother’s sister called me again that evening and said there was one more thing she hadn’t included because it involved her own sister. The day after the birthday, his wife had written, “He looked upset when he found out,” and Ethan’s father answered, “He’ll get used to not being included in everything. He needs to eventually.” She said that was the message that made her take the screenshot in the first place.
