THE LETTER THAT ARRIVED FOR MY HUSBAND ON THANKSGIVING MORNING

The letter said the Georgia Ports Authority was recognizing Tomas for twenty-two years without a single preventable safety incident—and for saving four lives during that time. I knew about the crane cable in 2016, but I didn’t know about the others. In 2009, he had spotted a container lock beginning to fail and stopped a crew seconds before forty thousand pounds of steel shifted above them. In 2013, he pulled a driver from a burning yard truck. And during a night shift in 2021, he performed CPR on a new dockworker until paramedics arrived. Tomas had never mentioned any of it at home. At the bottom of the letter was a handwritten note from the port director: “Men like Tomas are the reason other people get to go home to their families.”

Mateo asked me to read it aloud. I hesitated, but Tomas nodded. By the second paragraph, nobody was touching their food. Camille slowly lowered her phone. Then Mateo looked directly at her and said, “Aunt Camille, Dad told me his job is carrying things carefully because every container belongs to somebody waiting for it. But I think he carries people too.” Tomas immediately told him that was enough, but our son shook his head. “No, Dad. She said you don’t create value. I want her to know you brought four people home.” Camille’s face changed when she realized her livestream was still running.

Then Tomas did something that made me prouder than the letter ever could. He reached over, turned Camille’s phone facedown, and said, “Nobody here needs to embarrass anybody.” He looked at Mateo and added, “Son, your aunt works hard too. Different work doesn’t mean worthless work.” Then he looked at Camille. “But don’t ever teach my boy that a person’s value comes from how many people watch them.” Camille didn’t answer. She just stared at the table. And a few minutes later, Mateo quietly reached for his father’s scarred hand—the one damaged beneath a container crane ten years earlier—and held it through the rest of Thanksgiving dinner.
