MY INSTACART CUSTOMER SPELLED OUT “HELP ME” (PART 2)

…”keeps encouraging her little games. She’s not well, you understand. She gets confused.” He held out his hand for the receipt. “We won’t be needing you again.”

Then he closed the door. Gently. Like a man closing a door on a salesman.

I walked back to my car with my heart pounding. Then I realized something. He’d taken the bag, but not the phone card. Her note said to hand it to her myself, so I’d kept it in my jacket pocket, just in case.

I sat in my car and called 911. I felt ridiculous saying it out loud. “I deliver groceries, and my customer has been spelling out HELP ME with her shopping list.” The dispatcher didn’t laugh. She asked me to stay where I was and read her every message, in order.

When I scrolled back through the orders to read them, I saw the whole thing for the first time. H-E-L-P M-E. N-O P-H-O-N-E. H-E R-E-A-D-S A-L-L. And the last one, the one I’d missed: T-U-E-S-D-A-Y.

Two officers arrived for a welfare check twelve minutes later. I watched from my car. The man answered the door in his cardigan, smiling, and told them his wife was napping. One officer asked to see her anyway.

It took a while. Then she walked out onto the porch in a sweater that was much too big for her, holding the doorframe. She looked straight past the officers, right at my car, and nodded.

She told them everything that afternoon. He’d taken her phone, her car keys and her bank cards two years ago. The grocery app was the only thing he let her use, because he could read every word of it. He just never thought to read the first letters.

She’s staying with her sister now, three states away. Last week, I got a notification. A new Instacart customer, from a new address, ordering a single bouquet of tulips, to be delivered to me. The note said: “T-H-A-N-K Y-O-U.”
