MY HUSBAND’S MISTRESS SHOWED UP AT MY 50TH BIRTHDAY PARTY (PART 2)

…”the money from the business. He told you it was failing. He told me it sold for one point four million and he was ‘waiting for the right time’ to leave you. Neither of those things was true.”

She held out the envelope. “Happy birthday. I’m Vanessa. I’m sorry.”

My husband, Steve, was walking toward us across the lawn. Fast. “Vanessa, this isn’t the place—”

“It’s the perfect place,” she said, without looking at him. “Everyone you’ve lied to is here.”

I opened the envelope right there, in front of sixty guests and a three-tier cake. Inside were bank statements. An account in the Cayman Islands, in Steve’s name only. Wire transfers. And a sale agreement for the landscaping company Steve and I had built together over twenty-two years.

Steve had told me for eighteen months that the company was struggling. We’d cut back on everything. I’d gone back to working full-time at the dental office. We’d canceled our anniversary trip. He’d cried at our kitchen table and said he was “so sorry he’d let me down.”

The company hadn’t struggled. He’d sold it. For $1.4 million. Eight months ago. And moved the money offshore.

“He told me you were cold,” Vanessa said. “He told me the marriage had been dead for years. He told me as soon as the sale cleared, we’d buy a house in Arizona. Then last week, I found the second account. The one in his name only. He wasn’t planning to take care of me either. He was planning to disappear with all of it.”

Steve tried to grab the envelope. My brother-in-law stepped between us. Very calmly. Sixty people watched.

“I think you should go, Steve,” I said.

He went.

I called a divorce lawyer the next morning. She looked at Vanessa’s documents and said, very simply, “Half of that company was yours. So half of that money is yours. And hiding marital assets offshore is the fastest way to make a judge very angry.”

It took ten months. The judge was very angry. The court ordered the offshore account frozen and awarded me sixty percent of the sale proceeds, because of what the judge called Steve’s “deliberate concealment.” I got the house too.

Vanessa testified. She didn’t have to. She said she wanted to.

After the hearing, we got coffee. We’re not friends exactly. It’s hard to be friends with the woman who slept with your husband for two years. But she’s the only person in the world who understands exactly how good of a liar he was.

“Why did you come to my party?” I asked her. “You could’ve just mailed it.”

She thought about it. “Because he threw you a surprise party with the money he stole from you,” she said. “I wanted you to get one real surprise.”

For my fifty-first birthday, I went to Italy, the anniversary trip we’d canceled. I paid for it myself. With my half.
