I Left A One-Star Review For A Hotel — And The Owner Showed Up At My House With $50,000 (PART 2)

…my son.”

The man’s name was Charles Avery. He owned eleven hotels. And twelve years earlier, his sixteen-year-old son, Michael, had walked out of the house after a terrible argument and never came back. A week later, his jacket was found on the shore of Lake Michigan. Police concluded he had drowned.

Charles had been grieving him ever since.

He zoomed in on the reflection again. A man in his late twenties, in a hotel maintenance uniform, with a thin scar through his left eyebrow.

“Michael got that scar when he was nine,” Charles said. “Falling off his bike in our driveway.”

He didn’t want me to remove the review because of the bad publicity. He wanted the photo taken down before his son saw it online and disappeared again.

I refused the check. But I agreed to take the photo down and help. I called the hotel and asked for the maintenance manager. I described a problem with my old room and asked for the employee who’d fixed my air conditioning — the one with the scar.

His name, according to the manager, was Mike Reed. He’d worked there for six years. Quiet, reliable, never took a day off.

Charles flew to Chicago that afternoon. He didn’t storm in. He waited in the lobby with a cup of coffee, until his son came out of the service elevator.

Michael told him later that he’d run away because he thought his father was ashamed of him. He’d left his jacket on the beach so no one would look for him. He’d been working in his father’s own hotel by coincidence for six years, under a fake name, too ashamed to say anything.

They talked for four hours. Charles called me that night, crying so hard I could barely understand him.

My one-star review is gone. But a few weeks later, I received a letter from the hotel with a new reservation, a free week, and a note in Michael’s handwriting: “Your room’s AC works now. Thank you for noticing me.”
