I Received A $40,000 Electric Bill — Then The Power Company Asked If I Owned A Hospital (PART 2)

…February. Something big. With its own ventilation.”

The technicians called the police. By evening, there were six squad cars on my street.

Under my backyard, it turned out, was an old Cold War fallout shelter, built in 1962 by the original owner of my house. It had been sealed for decades. Nobody remembered it existed. The entrance was on the property behind mine, hidden inside a garden shed.

My back neighbor was a quiet man named Dr. Victor Hale. He’d lost his medical license five years earlier for prescription fraud. He told everyone he was a “retired consultant.”

When police went through his shed and down the stairs, they found a fully equipped clinic: an operating table, oxygen tanks, refrigerators full of medications. Dr. Hale had been running an illegal cosmetic surgery practice underground, charging patients cash for cut-price procedures. Most of his patients were women who couldn’t afford legitimate clinics.

He’d drilled into my basement to tap my electrical line because his own meter would have drawn attention. I’d been paying for his secret operating room for eight months.

One of his patients had been hospitalized with an infection a few weeks before my bill arrived. She’d been too afraid to tell doctors where she’d had the surgery. When police showed her a photograph of the shelter, she broke down and agreed to testify.

Dr. Hale was arrested for practicing medicine without a license, fraud and theft of utilities. Eleven more former patients came forward.

The power company cancelled my bill and reimbursed every dollar I’d been overcharged. The city sealed the shelter entrance with concrete.

I’m a retired librarian. I’ve spent my life recommending mystery novels to other people. I never expected to end up living in one. My book club now meets at my house every month, and every single member asks to see the basement first.
