My Son Accidentally Sent Me A Voice Message Saying “Mom Will Never Know About The Second Family” (PART 2)

…you deserve to know who I am. I’m your husband’s daughter.”

I sat down very slowly on her couch.

Her name was Grace. She was thirty-four. Her mother had had a brief relationship with my late husband, Richard, thirty-five years ago. Richard had never told me. He’d sent Grace’s mother money every month until she turned eighteen. Then he’d stopped. Grace never met him.

After Richard died two years ago, Grace found my son, Daniel, through a DNA website. They were half-siblings.

“The second family” wasn’t Daniel’s. It was his father’s.

Daniel had been visiting Grace for over a year. When her partner left her during her pregnancy, Daniel helped her with rent and groceries. That was part of why he’d been short on money and asking me for help with his mortgage. He hadn’t told me because he couldn’t figure out how to tell me his father had a daughter.

The baby wasn’t Daniel’s. The baby was Richard’s granddaughter.

“I asked Daniel to bring you here a dozen times,” Grace said. “He kept saying you weren’t ready. I didn’t want to wait anymore.”

I don’t know what I felt in that moment. Anger at Richard. Grief, all over again. And something unexpected: tenderness, looking at a little girl with my husband’s dimples.

I called Daniel from Grace’s couch. He arrived in twenty minutes, looking terrified. I told him I wasn’t angry with him for helping his sister. I was angry that he’d carried it alone.

Grace and the baby come to Sunday dinner now. Daniel’s wife, Anna, knew all along and had been urging him to tell me. The baby’s name is Rose. She’s the only good surprise Richard ever left me.
