My Sister Accidentally Sent Me The Email She Wrote To My Husband — And It Was Dated Before Our Wedding (PART 2)

…Ana Moreno. My sister’s best friend from college.”

I knew Ana. She’d been at my wedding, dancing with my sister all night. She’d sent me a Christmas card every year since.

I called my sister, Karen, and asked her to come over. Then I put the emails and the marriage certificate on my kitchen table. She went pale, then started to cry.

Twenty-two years ago, Ana was about to be deported. She’d been brought to this country as a child and had no papers. Her mother was dying of cancer. Karen asked my then-boyfriend, Tom, for a huge favor: marry Ana on paper so she could stay and care for her mother. Tom agreed.

“Are you sure she’ll never find out about us” meant me finding out about the plan. Tom and Karen were terrified that if I knew, I’d break up with him, or that someone would report the marriage as fraud.

Tom and Ana divorced the month before my wedding, once Ana had her legal status through a work visa. Ana’s mother died a year later, with her daughter beside her.

Karen’s fiancé had found the marriage certificate and assumed Tom was cheating with Karen. That’s why he left her. She never told me why.

I asked Tom that night. He told me everything. “I should have told you,” he said. “But Ana’s mother was dying, and I didn’t want anyone to know.”

I was angry for a while that they’d kept it from me for twenty years. But I’m married to a man who once married a stranger so a dying woman could keep her daughter. I’ve decided I can live with that. Ana came to our twenty-first anniversary dinner. She brought flowers and said, “Thank you for sharing your husband with me for a year.”
