My Son Asked Me One Question I Couldn’t Answer

That night my son asked me, “Why did you tell them it was a misunderstanding?” I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. He looked at me for a long time and then said, “I called because I thought you were going to die.” He was twelve, and somehow he was the one comforting me while I sat on the edge of his bed.

I told him I was scared and that I didn’t know what would happen if I admitted the truth. He nodded like he’d already understood that years before I did. Then he reached under his pillow and pulled out the little notebook he’d been keeping. Inside were dates, times, and short descriptions of things his father had done — including the night he made the 911 call.

I asked why he’d written everything down. He said, “Because I knew one day you might say it didn’t happen.” I couldn’t stop crying after that. I took the notebook downstairs, put it beside my phone, and made the call I’d been too afraid to make for nine years: I told the truth.
