My Son Asked Me If I Was Going to Take His Father Back

I opened my mouth and the first thing that came out was, “No.” My son looked at me like he needed to hear it twice, so I said it again. “No. I’m not taking him back.” He nodded, but he didn’t look relieved. He looked exhausted, like he’d been waiting fourteen years for me to say something that should have been obvious.

Then he told me why he’d stood in that doorway. He said he’d seen me get hurt before, but that night he decided he was old enough to stand between us. I reached for his hand and told him it was never supposed to be his job to protect me. He squeezed my hand and said, “I know. But somebody had to.”

We sat on those steps until the porch light came on. Before we went inside, he looked back at the mark his father had left in the doorframe and said, “Don’t paint over it yet.” I asked why, and he said, “Because I want us to remember the night everything finally changed.”
