Daniel was the first to answer, and his version was nothing like mine. He said Mom had told him Dad left because he couldn’t handle having three sons and had never wanted the family in the first place. Michael shook his head and said she’d told him Dad had been the one who wanted the divorce, but she’d stayed because she didn’t want us growing up without her. I remembered hearing something completely different: Mom had always said Dad simply disappeared one morning and never came back. We sat there in that hospital corridor realizing that none of us had ever actually known what happened. Then Daniel asked the question we’d all been avoiding: “So which one of us did she tell the truth to?”
We started looking through the old boxes that same night. Michael found a stack of letters from Dad that Mom had apparently kept hidden for decades, all unopened. The dates on them covered almost ten years, and every envelope had our names written on it. None of us had ever received a single one. The strangest part was that the letters weren’t angry or accusing; Dad kept asking whether we were safe, whether we were in school, and whether Mom would let him speak to us. Then we found one envelope marked with all three of our names, dated just six months before Dad died.
Inside was a single page, and the first sentence made all three of us stop breathing: “Your mother will tell each of you that I left for a different reason, because she needs each of you to believe you were the one I chose to stay for.” The rest explained something none of us had ever heard about—a decision Dad had made before leaving that involved money, the house, and custody of us. At the bottom he had written that he had never stopped trying to come back, but someone had made sure we never knew. Michael looked at Daniel, then at me, and said, “She didn’t raise three sons who could rely on her. She raised three sons who could never compare notes.” And for the first time in fifty years, we finally had the same story.
