My son reached me and quietly asked, “Mom, what is she doing?” I told him I didn’t know. He looked toward his fiancée, who suddenly looked terrified. The DJ had already started playing the song my son had chosen in 2019, and then my son held out his hand to me. We stepped onto the floor anyway. Halfway through the first verse, he leaned close and whispered, “She told me you agreed to this.” I told him nobody had asked me.
When the song ended, my son didn’t go back to his table. He walked straight to the DJ and asked who had requested it. The DJ pointed toward the bridal party and said the request had been submitted weeks earlier, under my son’s name. My son looked at his fiancée, and she immediately started crying. She said she’d only cancelled the dance because someone had convinced her that I had been “controlling” the wedding and that the dance would embarrass her. Then my son asked her one question: “Who told you that?”
She didn’t answer. Her mother did. She walked over and said she’d told her daughter everything she knew about me. My son asked what exactly she thought she knew. Then she mentioned a conversation from 2019 that could only have come from one person—because I’d had it privately with my son in my kitchen. My son went completely still. He turned to me and asked whether I’d ever repeated that conversation to anyone. I said no. Then he looked back at his fiancée and said, “Mom wasn’t the one who told you. You had my phone.”
