She unlocked her phone and showed me a message from my husband dated October 2015. It was only three lines, but I read them four times because the last one made my stomach drop: “Don’t tell her. She thinks the decision is hers.” My sister-in-law said she had never understood what he meant at the time. She only knew that after that conversation, he told her we were “taking adoption off the table.” I had never taken it off the table. We had spent years discussing it, filling out paperwork, and even meeting with an agency.
Then she showed me another message from the same week. It was from my husband to her, and he had attached a document I’d never seen. He wrote that I’d “change my mind if she knew the real reason.” My sister-in-law said she’d assumed he meant something medical, but she’d never asked because he told her it was private. I stared at the attachment name for a long time before asking if she still had it. She did. It was a scanned letter from an adoption agency, dated three days before my husband told me the agency had rejected our application.
The letter didn’t say we’d been rejected. It said our application had been placed on hold because my husband had withdrawn his consent without telling me. At the bottom was a handwritten note from the social worker: “Applicant’s wife has not been informed of husband’s decision.” I couldn’t breathe for a moment. My sister-in-law reached across the table and said there was one more thing she hadn’t told me. Two weeks after that letter, my husband had asked her to delete the messages because, in his words, “If she ever finds out, she’ll realize I made the decision years ago.”
