Nobody Came to Pick Me Up for My Son’s Wedding — So I Called the One Person I Swore I’d Never Call Again

I sat by the window in my navy dress with my purse on my lap, watching the clock move past noon, then two, then three. Nobody came. At four, I finally called the venue myself. The young woman checked the reservation and told me there had been no transportation arrangement for me. Then she asked, very gently, if I was family. I said, “I’m the groom’s mother.” There was a long pause, and I knew something was wrong.

I stayed in that chair until it got dark. I didn’t want to call my son because I was terrified he’d think I’d simply decided not to come. But eventually, I called the one person I’d promised myself I’d never ask for help again — my ex-husband. When he answered, I couldn’t even get the words out at first. I just asked, “Did you know nobody came for me?” He was silent.

Then he said something that made me sit completely still. “I thought you told them you weren’t coming.” I asked who had told him that. He said his wife had called him that morning and explained that I had changed my mind because the venue wasn’t accessible and I didn’t want to cause a problem. I told him that wasn’t true. I had been dressed and waiting since eleven.

He said he’d never been told I was still waiting at home. Then, after a long silence, he asked me one question: “Do you want me to tell our son what really happened?” I said yes. Ten minutes later, my phone rang. It was my son — and the first thing he said wasn’t hello. It was, “Mom, why did they tell me you refused to come?”
