My Father’s Dog Waited at the Driveway Every Afternoon for Two Years — Then a Stranger Stopped and Told My Mother Why

He said he’d been driving that road for almost two years and had noticed the dog every afternoon at exactly 4:15. He’d slow down because the dog would always stand at the same spot, staring toward the road as if he were waiting for someone. The man told my mother he’d eventually started stopping his truck for a few minutes because the dog would walk over and sit beside it, then look inside.

My mother asked him what any of this had to do with my father. The man said he had never met him, but he’d recognized the truck from an old photograph my mother had shown him years earlier. Then he told her something that made her stop breathing for a second. The dog wasn’t waiting for my father’s truck to come home. He was waiting for the sound it used to make when it turned onto the road.

The man explained that he had been driving that route before my father died and remembered seeing him every afternoon. But there was one day he’d never forgotten. My father’s truck had stopped near the end of the driveway, and my father had gotten out and walked into the woods with the dog following him. He’d come back alone. The stranger had always assumed it was nothing until he saw the dog waiting there every day afterward.

My mother asked why he hadn’t told us sooner. He looked down and said, “Because I didn’t think it was my story to tell.” Then he reached into his truck and handed her an old envelope. He’d kept it for two years because he’d found it on the roadside that afternoon, caught beneath a branch. My mother’s hands started shaking when she saw the handwriting on the front. It was my father’s, and the name he’d written on it wasn’t hers…
