I Found a Key to an Apartment on My Husband’s Keyring — and Inside Was Everything My Missing Son Owned

Paul said, “He’s been back since April. He made me promise. He’s not ready for you to see him yet because of what he thinks you did.” I couldn’t speak. Our son disappeared in 2019 without leaving a note, and we’d spent seven years believing he was either dead or wanted nothing to do with us. Paul said he’d found him by accident through an old friend and had been meeting him twice a week ever since. The $3,000 wasn’t rent for someone else. It was money Paul had been giving our son while he tried to get his life back together.

I asked why our son wouldn’t come home. Paul looked at me and said he’d asked him the same thing. “He said the last thing he remembers is you telling him you wished you’d never had to choose between your children.” I told Paul that wasn’t what I’d meant. Our son had been eighteen, angry, and fighting with his sister at the time. I’d said something cruel in a moment I regretted immediately, but he’d left the next morning. Paul said he’d heard my son repeat that sentence for seven years and believed I’d meant every word.

Then Paul handed me an envelope that had been sitting on the apartment table since April. My son’s handwriting was on the front. Inside was a photograph of the three of us from the summer before he disappeared, with one sentence written across the back: “Dad says she’s ready to hear it, but I need to know whether she remembers what she said that night.” Paul told me my son would meet me the following Sunday if I could answer one question honestly. He said, “He doesn’t want an apology. He wants to know whether you actually remember why you said it.”
