Dennis said, “She made me swear. It’s not mine to tell you, but she’s coming home Sunday and she asked me to make sure you were ready.” I asked what I was supposed to be ready for, and he showed me another photograph. Our daughter was sitting in a doctor’s office with a hospital bracelet on her wrist. She’d been keeping something from both of us for months. The Wednesday “training” wasn’t training at all. Dennis had been driving her to appointments, paying for things she couldn’t afford, and bringing her clothes because she’d lost so much weight that nothing fit anymore.
I asked why the lingerie was in his bag. He said our daughter had bought it months ago and asked him to keep it because she couldn’t take it home without her husband finding out. Then he told me she’d been preparing to leave her marriage. “She didn’t cheat,” he said. “She found out he did, and the woman he’s been seeing is someone you know.” The four restaurant charges weren’t dates. They were meetings with a lawyer, and the $900 was the first payment for an apartment she had rented under another name.
Then Dennis showed me the message she’d sent him that morning. It said, “Don’t tell Mom yet. I need to tell her myself why I stayed, and why I didn’t come home sooner.” I asked him whether she was safe, and he said yes—but there was one thing he hadn’t told me. Our daughter had discovered something in her husband’s phone that changed everything, and she’d saved a copy before leaving. Dennis looked at me and said, “She’s bringing it Sunday because she says you’re the only person who needs to see it before she decides what to do next.”
