Sunday dinner was the first time I had ever confronted him about the garage. I put the printout on the table and asked him why a man had driven two hours to our house looking for a truck that had supposedly been for sale for five years. My father-in-law didn’t look surprised. He looked at my husband. Then my husband looked at me and asked where I got the paper. Nobody touched their food.
My father-in-law finally admitted the trucks weren’t his. He had been buying and selling them through our address because his own business had outstanding debts and couldn’t be registered under his name. The garage was essentially his free storage lot, and the sales had been going through an account I knew nothing about. I asked how many vehicles he’d sold from our property. He said, “Maybe twenty.” My husband immediately stood up and told him to stop talking.
Then I pulled out the second page. It showed the total amount of sales tied to our address since 2016. It was $417,000. My father-in-law stared at the number for several seconds before quietly saying, “Your husband knew about some of it.” That was the moment my husband stopped defending his father. Because apparently, he hadn’t known about the money—but he had known the garage wasn’t being used for “temporary storage” like he’d been telling me for nine years.
