I asked Mom about the three accounts, but she wouldn’t give me a straight answer. She just sat at the kitchen table and said my sister’s husband had “never been very good at keeping promises.” I asked what that meant, and Mom looked toward the window before telling me something I’d never heard in thirty years. The money wasn’t going to my sister because she was irresponsible. It was going somewhere else.
Mom finally admitted that one of the accounts had been opened in 2011 after my sister’s husband lost a large amount of money. He had promised to repay it, but instead my mother had been quietly covering the payments ever since. The other two accounts were connected to debts I’d never known existed. My sister wasn’t spending Mom’s money on herself at all—she’d been trying to keep her husband’s financial problems from destroying their family.
Then Mom handed me a folder she’d kept hidden in her bedroom. Inside were copies of every transfer, every loan, and every payment she’d made for fifteen years. The total was $96,400. At the very bottom was a handwritten note from my sister, dated 2011: “Please don’t let him know I’m the one who asked for help.”
