THE ENVELOPE CONTAINED THE PAPER I SHOULD HAVE READ SIX YEARS AGO

I walked into the backyard and waited until my niece finished opening the gifts. Then I placed the envelope on the table in front of her and told her not to open it until everyone was sitting down. Her smile disappeared when she saw the name of the company printed across the front. I told her I wasn’t there to ruin her baby shower. I was there because six years earlier she’d told me I was signing a simple favor for her, and that favor had cost me $11,000, my credit, and my car. She laughed nervously and said she’d already apologized. I said, “No, you said you were a kid. There’s a difference.”

She opened the envelope. Inside was the original lease application, the payment history, and a letter from the apartment management company confirming that the debt had never been legally mine. My niece had used my signature, but she’d also submitted another document with a different signature after she stopped paying. The apartment company had eventually sent the entire file to collections, where nobody bothered to compare the signatures. My attorney had done it. I told her I had spent six years believing I’d simply made a stupid mistake. Then I showed her the final page — the one she had never seen. It had her signature, her driver’s license number, and the date she took possession of the apartment.

Her husband picked up the papers and asked why she had never told him. She started crying and said she’d been afraid he’d leave her if he knew. I told her I wasn’t asking for the money anymore. I’d already recovered it through the dispute process. What I wanted was the truth. She looked at me and finally said, “I knew you’d forgive me eventually.” I shook my head and answered, “I forgave the nineteen-year-old who needed help. I don’t owe anything to the woman who watched me lose my car and said I deserved it.” Then I put the envelope back in my purse and walked toward the door. Behind me, her husband quietly asked, “What else did you sign?”
