MY HUSBAND ASKED ME TO STOP COMING TO HIS DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENTS — EIGHT MONTHS LATER I LEARNED HE’D BEEN TRYING TO BECOME A LIVING DONOR FOR A BOY I’D NEVER HEARD OF

He said the boy was twenty-nine and needed a kidney, and his name was Daniel Mercer. I waited for the rest because the name meant nothing to me. My husband finally said, “Daniel is my son.” Before we met, before our marriage, there had been a woman he’d dated for less than a year. She disappeared after they broke up and contacted him months later to say she was pregnant, but she also told him she was marrying somebody else and wanted that man to raise the baby. My husband agreed to stay away. He had honored that agreement for twenty-nine years.

Daniel hadn’t known either. The man who raised him died believing he was his biological father, and his mother kept the truth until Daniel became seriously ill and doctors started asking relatives about testing. She called my husband last June. He took the test without telling me, and he was a surprisingly strong match. That was why the appointments started. He said every time he sat in the truck afterward he intended to come home and tell me, but telling me about the kidney meant telling me about the son, and he couldn’t figure out how to separate those two confessions.

Then he showed me a photograph Daniel had sent him. I knew the face immediately, not because I’d seen Daniel before, but because he looked exactly like my husband had looked when we married. On the back Daniel had written, “I don’t know what I’m supposed to call you, but thank you for getting tested before you even knew whether I wanted to meet you.” My husband said Daniel still wasn’t sure he wanted a relationship. He only wanted to live long enough to have the choice.

I asked why he’d risk surgery at sixty-seven without telling his wife. He looked at me for a long time and said, “Because if I told you first, I was afraid you’d ask me not to do it, and I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life knowing I let my son die because I was more afraid of hurting my marriage than helping him.” Then he slid the donor paperwork toward me. The surgery date was already written at the top — and underneath Daniel’s emergency contact, in handwriting I recognized, my husband had written my name.
