The handwriting on the first pages wasn’t his. I recognized the blue Buick immediately because it belonged to my mother. She drove that car every Wednesday until she died, and the notebook had entries from 2009 — two years before my husband and I even met. I kept reading until I found the same road listed over and over again. Then I noticed something strange: every Wednesday, my mother stopped at the same address for exactly twenty-five minutes. I had never known about that stop. At the bottom of the page was one sentence: “She never goes inside through the front.”
I took a picture of the page and sent it to my husband before he came home. He called me within thirty seconds. He didn’t ask what I’d found. He asked, “Where did you get that notebook?” I told him the glove box. There was silence. Then he admitted he’d found the notebook years ago, but he’d never written the older entries. His father had kept them. Apparently, my mother and his father had known each other long before our marriage, and both had been involved in something neither family ever talked about. The Wednesday route wasn’t random — my mother had been delivering envelopes to his father’s workshop.
I asked what was inside them. My husband finally told me he’d spent years trying to figure that out himself. Then he opened a locked box and showed me copies of old receipts, photographs, and one handwritten letter from 2009. My mother’s name was on the letter, along with his father’s. The final line read: “If anything happens to me, she knows where the original is.” I looked at my husband and asked where the original was now. He shook his head and said he had no idea. Then my phone buzzed. An unknown number had sent me one photograph — my mother’s blue Buick parked outside the same workshop, with my husband’s father standing beside it. Under the picture were five words: “Your mother left something behind.”
