I stood on that porch looking at her because I had seen her photograph twice before — once in my wife’s wedding album and once on a memorial card dated 1993. She noticed where I was looking and said, “Ellen told me you’d come eventually.” I asked what she meant. She said my wife had been sending money every month for years, always in cash, always with instructions that I was never to know. Then she went inside and brought out a folder. Inside were propane bills, pharmacy receipts, and photographs of my wife standing beside that same little white house. The oldest photograph was dated 2001.
I asked her why everyone had told me she was dead. She sat down and said the woman who died in 1993 had been her sister, but she wasn’t the only daughter in their family. My wife had another sister nobody talked about because she’d disappeared when she was young. She said my wife’s father had blamed her for something that happened to the family and made everyone swear her name would never be spoken again. My wife had found her in 2001 and quietly bought the house in Morrow County so she would have somewhere to live. The ramp in front of it wasn’t for my wife’s sister. It was for the daughter she had been raising.
Then she opened the last envelope. There was a handwritten letter from my wife, dated three weeks before she died. It said, “If he ever finds you, tell him everything. He deserves to know why I kept this from him.” I read the next line twice. My wife wrote that she’d been paying for the house because she had made a promise to someone in 1986, before we were married. I asked the woman what the promise was. She looked at me and said, “Your wife promised my daughter that her father would never find out where she lived.” I felt my stomach drop. I asked who the girl’s father was. She pointed to an old photograph on the wall — and the man standing beside my wife was me.
