MY GRANDDAUGHTER HAS AN “AUNT” WHO DOESN’T EXIST — BUT SHE’S PICKED HER UP FROM SCHOOL ELEVEN TIMES

I asked the secretary to enlarge the driver’s license on the screen. The woman in the photograph was my daughter’s sister-in-law, a woman I hadn’t seen since my daughter’s wedding. I asked why her relationship was listed as “aunt,” and the secretary said that was exactly how the woman had identified herself every time she picked Harper up. I called my daughter immediately. She said she’d never put anyone else on the pickup list and had never given this woman permission. Then the secretary checked the dates. Every pickup happened on a Wednesday, always between 3:10 and 3:20, while I was at dialysis.

I asked the school to pull the sign-out sheets. Eleven signatures, eleven matching IDs, and every single one written in the same handwriting. The secretary said the woman always arrived alone, showed her license, signed Harper out, and told the staff she was taking her to her grandmother’s house. That made no sense because Harper’s grandmother is me, and I was never home on Wednesdays. I asked where she’d taken her. The secretary pulled up the emergency notes and said the woman had always written the same address in Bloomfield. It was an address I’d never heard of — until I realized it was my daughter’s old address from before she got married.

I drove there that evening. The house was empty, but a neighbor remembered the woman and said she’d been coming every Wednesday for years. I asked what she did there. The neighbor said she usually stayed about an hour, then drove Harper back toward town. I called my daughter again and asked whether she had ever lived there with someone else. She went silent. Then she said, “Mum, don’t go back there.” I asked why. She finally admitted that before Harper was born, she had given a baby up for adoption — and the woman on that school form was the child’s adoptive mother. Then she said the part she had never told me: Harper wasn’t the first child that woman had been taking to that house.
