MY HUSBAND SOLD OUR FAMILY’S HEIRLOOMS FOR YEARS — BUT THE LAST NAME ON HIS LIST WAS THE ONE HE NEVER SPOKE ABOUT

I called the number again that evening. The man who answered knew my husband’s first name before I introduced myself. I asked who the woman was, and he said he couldn’t discuss someone else’s business. I told him my husband had died and that her name was written beside one of the items in his safe. There was a long silence. Then he asked whether I was the wife from Ardmore. I said yes. He told me my husband had been sending him money every few months for almost nine years, always with the same instruction: “If she ever calls, tell her I’m still looking for her.” I asked what he meant. He said he didn’t know, but my husband had once shown him a photograph of a little girl.

I went back through the coffee can and found an envelope underneath the money. Inside was a photograph of my husband standing beside a woman I’d never seen before, holding a toddler who had his exact eyes. On the back, my husband had written a date from 1998 and one sentence: “I should have told them.” I searched through his old papers until I found a life-insurance statement from that same year. There was a beneficiary change attached to it, but the name had been crossed out. Underneath was the name of the woman from the photograph. The strange part was that my husband had never mentioned having a daughter, and our sons had never heard of her.

Then I found the last page of his list again. The name beside the missing item wasn’t the woman’s name from the photograph. It was a different woman entirely. I called her number one more time. This time she answered, and when I said my husband’s name, she started crying. She told me she’d been waiting for him to call since 2004. I asked why. She said, “Because he promised he’d come back when your children were old enough.” Then she asked whether he had left anything for me. I told her about the list. She went completely quiet and said, “Then he finally kept one promise. The thing beside my name isn’t yours to keep — it’s the proof that your husband had another family before you.”
