THE PHOTO OF MY FATHER HAD A MISSING MAN IN IT — AND SOMEONE ADDED A NOTE YEARS LATER

The line said “He didn’t leave.” I stared at it for a long time because everybody in town had always said the same thing: that the man disappeared one night and nobody ever found out what happened. I took the photograph to my grandmother’s house and showed her the writing. She wouldn’t touch it. She just asked me where I’d gotten it. When I told her, she said she’d seen that photograph before — but my father had never been in the version she remembered.

I went back to the bakery the next Friday and asked if they had any other photographs from that box. The woman brought out an old envelope that had been sitting underneath the corkboard supplies. There were six photographs inside, all from the same summer. My father was in five of them. The missing man was in all six. And in the last photograph, my father was standing beside him with his hand on the man’s shoulder. On the back was the same date as the disappearance, but underneath it someone had written a different address.

I drove there that afternoon. It was an old farmhouse about twenty minutes outside town, and an elderly woman answered the door. I hadn’t said my name yet, but she looked at the photograph in my hand and said, “So your father finally told you.” I asked what she meant. She said he had come there three days before the man disappeared, carrying a suitcase and asking her to keep something safe. Then she went inside and returned with a small metal box. On it was my father’s name — and underneath, in handwriting I recognized from the photograph, was the date my father disappeared too.
