MY HUSBAND OPENED THE DOOR FOR THE SAME WOMAN EVERY OTHER SUNDAY

Our doorbell camera sent me a clip Sunday of a woman at my front door at 6:40 in the morning, and my husband opened it before she knocked twice. We’re outside Lubbock, Texas. He gets up at five-thirty. I don’t get up until seven, and he knows it. I trusted him because in twenty-nine years he’d never once been anywhere he said he wasn’t. She wasn’t there ninety seconds. He handed her an envelope, and she left. I went back through the camera history, and it was every other Sunday since the camera went up in 2023. Twenty-six times. Same woman. Same envelope.

I didn’t say anything for two weeks. Then I put a note in the envelope drawer where he kept them — just a folded blank piece of paper, so I’d know if he took one. He took it that Saturday night. Sunday morning I stood in the dark hallway and watched him open the door. The woman saw me over his shoulder before he knew I was there. She looked relieved, not frightened. She said, “Oh, thank God,” and told me she’d been telling him for two years that I deserved to know. Then she pushed past him and put the envelope in my hands.

There was cash, a photograph, and a note with a phone number. The photograph was of a girl who looked about nineteen, and she had my husband’s chin. The note had the girl’s name and one sentence: “She thinks she’s your daughter.” I looked at my husband and he wouldn’t look back at me. The woman said she’d met him years ago when he was helping her family, and she’d only started coming to the house because he promised he’d tell me himself. Then she said the girl had been asking for my husband every Sunday because she believed he’d abandoned her mother — and the woman had finally decided to bring her to my door.
